Ethiopian, Somali troops take key city
Ethiopian troops and Somali government forces have seized control of a key Somali city after battling Islamist rebels on the outskirts, leaving at least 18 dead, sources said.
The city, Beledweyne, lies some 30 kilometres from the Ethiopian border in the Hiran region of central Somalia.
"The fighting started this morning after our forces supported by the Ethiopian military attacked the enemy's positions on the outskirts of Beledweyne," Bare Abdulahi, a Somali government security official, said on Saturday from the scene.
"They lost in the battle and we have penetrated into their barracks killing nearly 20 of their fighters before taking control of the city. The Somali government forces alone entered the city and they are securing it now," he added.
"We have counted around 18 dead bodies, most of them the combatants, some of them have died outside the city and others are lying in the streets of Beledweyne," Mohamed Moalim Osmail, an elder in the city, confirmed to AFP.
"I saw some Somali government troops accompanied by armed trucks belonging to the Ethiopian forces, they have entered the city and the fighting has stopped now", Abdirahman Isa, another witness, said.
The al-Qaeda-linked Shabab rebel movement denied having been defeated in the city.
"The enemy tried to destroy the frontline barracks of the mujahideen fighters but they lost in the battle, we killed many of them and the mujahideen fighters have retreated back from some positions in order to reorganise their strategy", Abu Musab told reporters in Mogadishu.
Residents said that several hundred Ethiopian troops on November 19 crossed into Hiran and another region of central Somalia Galgudud, but Addis Ababa, which invaded Somalia in 2006 with US backing, dismissed the reports as "absolutely not true".
The 2006 invasion sparked a bloody uprising and Ethiopia's troops pulled out three years later after failing to restore order in its lawless neighbour, which has lacked a functioning government for two decades.
Hardline Shabab insurgents control much of southern Somalia, but are also battling both the Western-backed government in Mogadishu and Kenyan troops in the far south, who crossed the border in mid-October to attack rebel strongholds.
Kenya on Saturday said it would circulate photographs of 15 people the Kenyan police say can provide information on the Shabab.
Police spokesman Eric Kiraithe told journalists the 15 - nine Kenyans, two Asians and four Somalis - are believed to have left the Somali port of Kismayo recently and said "some are believed to be in Kenya already .. with the intent of engaging in criminal activities".
Most of the Kenyans in the group are believed to have resided in Nairobi and in the Kenyan coastal resort of Mombasa before leaving for Somalia around one year ago.

Why You Should Consider A Credit Card Debt Relief Program

(SkyNewswire.com) Using a credit card debt relief program is an option every consumer who is in debt to their creditors of $10,000.00 or more should strongly consider. We are not fans of the credit card companies and the way they conduct business. My question to you would be, why should you continue to pay their ridiculous interest rates and fees for the next 10 or 15 years when you can be done with them in about 2 or 3 years while still maintaining a good credit rating. This type of credit consolidation just makes to much sense for most people that it would be foolish not to even consider.
Debt Relief
You really need to know that using credit card debt relief programs that are readily available can literally save you thousands of dollars over the course of a few years, not to mention you will get out of debt quicker. How much money you actually save will depend upon the type of program you join and the amount of the original debt. Whatever the amount is, I can promise you it will be a very nice sum of money. In our experience consumers can expect to save approximately 50 to 60% of their original debt. Credit consolidation used in this manner can be an excellent tool for you to use to get out from this type of debt.
You may be asking yourself why should I consider using any credit card debt relief strategy ins so far as debt solutions are concerned when I can just file for bankruptcy and be done with it once and for all.
Bankruptcy could take years and a lot of hard work for you to overcome once it is in your credit files. Bankruptcy has so much of it's own headaches, hassles and generally such an all around negative impact to it, that it really is more advantageous for you just to find and join a good debt relief program. So unless it's absolutely necessary, bankruptcy should only be used after all other options have been carefully weighed. I hope you can see by now that credit consolidation to get rid of this debt is just such a better plan.
Debt Relief Programs
Finding the right credit card debt relief program for your particular situation can be confusing if you have no idea of where or how to begin. You should start by finding a good source that is trusted and reliable in this industry. Hopefully this fact finding mission will lead you to a source who has done all the hard work for you and all the information you need you will find in one location. There are so many groups and companies offering credit consolidation today, I don't believe this will be a hard task at all for you to complete.
Obama debt relief and credit card debt relief Obama are bantered about on talk radio these days, but so far it simply does not exist. Deciding, finding, and then choosing to use a proven credit card debt relief strategy that's just right for you doesn't have to be a series of difficult decisions. Now it's time to really sit down and ask yourself if this is what is best for you and your situation. Do you need help with getting your finances back in order?
If you decided that yes, this is something you really need to do then find that great resource who you can trust when your trying to make the tough decisions. Please keep in mind what we previously discussed about the amount of groups offering some type of credit consolidation that can help you get through all this. Government debt relief and government debt relief programs may also be available to you.
Finally, you will simply follow through with all of your information, contact a few, and then decide which program is right for you. It really can be that easy, so don't put it off another day, just take action and get started immediately. You will not regret it. Once you find a good credit card debt relief program that can handle all of your credit consolidation needs, you will be on your way to once again getting control of your finances.

NASA probe circling the moon on New Year's Eve

PASADENA, California (AP) ? As planet Earth rang in the new year, a different kind of countdown was happening at the moon.
After a 3?-month journey, a NASA spacecraft flew over the moon's south pole, fired its engine and dropped into orbit Saturday in the first of two back-to-back arrivals over the New Year's weekend.
Mission control at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory erupted in cheers and applause after receiving confirmation that the probe was healthy and circling the moon. An engineer was seen on closed-circuit television blowing a noisemaker to herald the New Year's Eve arrival.
"Everything went just as we hoped. The burn was spot-on," chief scientist Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said in a post-mission interview with The Associated Press.
The team toasted sparkling cider, but the celebration was brief. Despite the successful maneuver, the work was not over. Its twin still had to enter lunar orbit on New Year's Day.
The Grail probes ? short for Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory ? have been cruising independently toward their destination since launching in September aboard the same rocket on a mission to measure lunar gravity.
Hours before revelers in Times Square celebrated the New Year, Grail-A approached the moon and fired its engine for about 40 minutes to get captured into orbit. Deep space antennas in the California desert and Madrid tracked every move and fed real-time updates to ground controllers
About 270 family members and friends of the mission team descended on the NASA campus to watch the drama unfold on a live feed.
"This is great, a big relief," deputy project scientist Sami Asmar told the jubilant crowd.
Grail is the 110th mission to target the moon since the dawn of the Space Age including the six Apollo moon landings that put 12 astronauts on the surface. Despite the attention the moon has received, scientists don't know everything about Earth's nearest neighbor.
Why the moon is ever so slightly lopsided with the far side more mountainous than the side that always faces Earth remains a mystery. A theory put forth earlier this year suggested that Earth once had two moons that collided early in the solar system's history, producing the hummocky region.
Grail is expected to help researchers better understand why the moon is asymmetrical and how it formed by mapping the uneven lunar gravity field that will indicate what's below the surface.
Previous lunar missions have attempted to study the moon's gravity ? which is about one-sixth Earth's pull ? with mixed results. Grail is the first mission devoted to this goal.
Once in orbit, the near-identical spacecraft will spend the next two months refining their positions until they are just 34 miles above the surface and flying in formation. Data collection will begin in March.
The $496 million mission will be closely watched by schoolchildren. An effort by Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, will allow middle school students to use cameras aboard the probes to zoom in and pick out their favorite lunar spots to photograph.
Despite the latest focus on the moon, NASA won't be sending astronauts back anytime soon. The Obama administration last year nixed a lunar return in favor of landing humans on an asteroid and eventually Mars.
A jaunt to the moon is usually speedy. It took the Apollo astronauts three days to zip there aboard the powerful Saturn V rocket. Since NASA wanted to economize by launching on a small rocket, it took Grail a leisurely 3 1/2 months to make a roundabout trip.
NASA's last moonshot occurred in 2009 with the launch of a pair of spacecraft ? one that circled the moon and another that deliberately crashed into the surface and uncovered frozen water in one of the permanently shadowed lunar craters.

CAT CHAT: Book Review: Pampered Pets On A Budget: Written By ...
My pets, like everyone else's are pampered and since I am virtually unemployed and my husband has recently retired, the idea that I could read about how to pamper my pet and receive ideas/suggestions about how to do so AND maintain a budget had my ears perked and my tail on alert!
These are tough times in which we live. Every day people are losing jobs and struggling to make ends meet, while the prices of groceries, medical care, etc. continue to rise. Sadly, when a family experiences a financial blow one of the first casualties is often the family pet.
As pet lovers we can never have too many tools in our tool belt to help us not only care for our pets but to maintain a budget while doing so and this book sets out to do what it promises, and that is to:
"help pet parents uncover new ways to save on the products and services you need to take great care of your pets, without compromising your pet's health and wellness care or severely damaging your pocketbook."
This book is short (74 pages) but don't let that fool you. It is 74 pages that are jam-packed with must-have information for today's pet owner.
Take a look at some of the chapters:
Chapter 3-The Internet is not Always Right: this chapter was written by Jeffrey Barnes and is one ?of my personal favorites. We have all fallen victim to running to the internet when our animal is ill. It can be anything from a Google search to posting a problem on Facebook and receiving 500 differing opinions. Many of those opinions include horror stories that when you are already stressed and worried, are the LAST things that you need to hear.
This chapter explains:
- How the internet is NOT a substitute for your veterinarian, your veterinarian knows YOU and your pet!
- It reinforces how when you are reading ANY information from the internet you need to look at the qualifications, licensing and formal education of the source providing that information!
- It mentions how drug and vaccine manufacturers stand behind their products ONLY when they have been purchased directly from your veterinarian.
Other great chapters in this 10 chapter book are:
Chapter 4-Trusted Online Pet Resources-
in this chapter Kristen Levine points out that there is some online information that can be trusted but that it should NEVER take the place of human professionals when it comes to your beloved pet.
?This chapter talks about:
General pet information and adoption sites such as petfinder.com and catster.com
?It also mentions reputable Veterinary and Health Sites such as VeterinaryPartner.com?
Chapter 5-The Value of Your Veterinarian: as explained by Jeffrey Barnes one of my favorite points made in this chapter is "your veterinarian is your pet's medical health care captain and is the only authority on medical issues."
Chapter 7-Pet Health Insurance is discussed by Kristen Levine and is relevant to me because I am still pondering the issue as to whether or not to purchase pet insurance for Cody and Dakota. Some points that Kristen mentions that are important to consider are:
Consider Premiums, Co-Pays and Deductibles
Pick Coverage, Not Cost
This book contains so much information and delivers it in an interesting, ?straight-forward, concise and ?reader-friendly style.
I loved that at the end of each chapter there is a page called Chapter Highlights which is a summation of information listed in an easy to refer to bulleted format.
Pampered Pets On A Budget ?will be your newest, invaluable resource to help you "properly position yourself to give your pet the best lifestyle possible."

DHS launches hot line for jailed immigrants (AP)
WASHINGTON ? The Homeland Security Department is launching a hot line for people jailed on immigration charges who believe they are victims of crime or may be U.S. citizens.
The toll free hot line ? 855-448-6903 ? will be staffed 24 hours a day and run by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to answer questions from people held in local jails about whether they may face deportation proceedings.
The hot line is the latest move by the Obama administration to address concerns about suspected illegal immigrants held in local jails. Earlier this month, Homeland Security ended agreements that had allowed deputies at an Arizona sheriff's office to check the immigration status of local jail inmates after a Justice Department report outlined allegations of racial profiling and discrimination against Latinos.
