Increasing inventory turns in the restaurant industry

Mar 29 2012

Inventory is an important consideration for businesses in a number of industries. Distributors, for example, often seek to increase the number of inventory turns they conduct each year, ensuring old products do not remain on their warehouse shelves taking up space and money.

Supply levels are of equal importance to restaurateurs, particularly since these businesses deal with perishable products. David Scott Peters, a consultant and restaurant "coach," wrote in an advice column for Restaurant Hospitality that entrepreneurs concerned about the rising cost of food and ingredients should take a lesson from distributors and look to increase their own inventory turns.

"You have to understand that inventory is money sitting on your shelves that you can?t pay your bills with," Peters wrote. "Worse yet, if you have too much inventory on your shelves, you risk employee theft because you have so much stuff sitting there you?d never know it was missing. Or it may simply spoil."

Peters noted that most full-service restaurants complete around four inventory turns per month ? completely shedding and then restocking their food supply on a weekly basis. However, an ideal number of inventory turns would be eight, ensuring that eateries shed and restock food supplies every three to four days.

In doing so, these businesses would be able to limit the potential for theft, provide fresher, healthier food to customers and leaving enough cash on hand to pay immediate expenses and organize billing.

At the same time, it may be difficult for restaurateurs to increase their number of inventory turns if their existing ERP software can only provide visibility into food cost and inventory after the end of financial reporting periods. By investing in a restaurant accounting software that allows weekly or even more frequent visibility of inventory levels, these business owners benefit from an improved ability to view and analyze supply levels, increase inventory turns and reduce spoilage and theft..

'Living' micro-robot could detect diseases in humans

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? A tiny prototype robot that functions like a living creature is being developed which one day could be safely used to pinpoint diseases within the human body.

Called 'Cyberplasm', it will combine advanced microelectronics with latest research in biomimicry (technology inspired by nature). The aim is for Cyberplasm to have an electronic nervous system, 'eye' and 'nose' sensors derived from mammalian cells, as well as artificial muscles that use glucose as an energy source to propel it.

The intention is to engineer and integrate robot components that respond to light and chemicals in the same way as biological systems. This is a completely innovative way of pushing robotics forward.

Cyberplasm is being developed over the next few years as part of an international collaboration funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in the UK and the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the USA. The UK-based work is taking place at Newcastle University. The project originated from a 'sandpit' (idea gathering session) on synthetic biology jointly funded by the two organisations.

Cyberplasm will be designed to mimic key functions of the sea lamprey, a creature found mainly in the Atlantic Ocean. It is believed this approach will enable the micro-robot to be extremely sensitive and responsive to the environment it is put into. Future uses could include the ability to swim unobtrusively through the human body to detect a whole range of diseases.

The sea lamprey has a very primitive nervous system, which is easier to mimic than more sophisticated nervous systems. This, together with the fact that it swims, made the sea lamprey the best candidate for the project team to base Cyberplasm on.

Once it is developed the Cyberplasm prototype will be less than 1cm long. Future versions could potentially be less than 1mm long or even built on a nanoscale.

"Nothing matches a living creature's natural ability to see and smell its environment and therefore to collect data on what's going on around it," says bioengineer Dr Daniel Frankel of Newcastle University, who is leading the UK-based work.

Cyberplasm's sensors are being developed to respond to external stimuli by converting them into electronic impulses that are sent to an electronic 'brain' equipped with sophisticated microchips. This brain will then send electronic messages to artificial muscles telling them how to contract and relax, enabling the robot to navigate its way safely using an undulating motion.

Similarly, data on the chemical make-up of the robot's surroundings can be collected and stored via these systems for later recovery by the robot's operators.

Cyberplasm could also represent the first step on the road to important advances in, for example, advanced prosthetics where living muscle tissue might be engineered to contract and relax in response to stimulation from light waves or electronic signals.

"We're currently developing and testing Cyberplasm's individual components," says Daniel Frankel. "We hope to get to the assembly stage within a couple of years. We believe Cyberplasm could start being used in real-world situations within five years."

Samsung ships five million Galaxy Notes in just five months

Five is an important number for Samsung's Galaxy Note. It has a 5.3-inch screen and now, just five months since it debuted Samsung has announced it's shipped five million units (the one million mark was crossed right around the end of December). That's certainly long enough for you to decide if you're in love with its super-sized frame or the accompanying S-Pen stylus, but unfortunately it has not been quite enough time for the highly-anticipated Ice Cream Sandwich software update to be released. While the world waits for the Premium Suite of apps and Android 4.0, let's think back to all the good times we had, including its initial unveiling, our original review and finally its arrival in the US on AT&T. So, are you convinced yet that there's a place in the world for a device like this, or five million phablets later are you still thinking this is just a fad?

Update: If you prefer to use your stylus for kanji or kana, Engadget Japan has NTT Docomo's announcement that it will release the Galaxy Note with LTE, branded the SC-05D, on its network April 6th.

[Thanks, ph00ny]

Computer hardware the core essential of a computer system ...

There are numerous professions in the industry but computers are the one that people are opting for. There is a tremendous technological revolution towards which the youth curve is bending. They want to have a future with computer filed as they know that it is never going to be lacking behind or fall out of fashion. It is certain to keep giving tremendous returns. The interest is penetrating enough that along with software, there is a need to know everything about computer hardware too. They want to know about every minor part of the central processing unit of a computer and other parts. In fact hardware and software are the two names that go along in the entire computer history; people can specialize in either of them or both.

For those who are interested, there are many hardware and networking courses that train the individuals for the purposes. These courses give them the knowledge about computer software and hardware regarding specific courses or they even train them to excel in computers with various certifications, one of which is Cisco CCNA. This certification gives the candidates an edge over the others and keeps them apart with their excelled skills and knowledge. When employed, they are given a preference over others who just have the basic knowledge of computers. It is very essential in this highly competitive world.

The hardware is one profession which is always going to keep one engaged whether they are the computers from a major multi-national or a simple desktop at one?s house. The computer engineers are the one who are never going to fall out of work. The computer engineers have also excelled in the software department and so they know what will be the best that suits your system or they can fix the problem of a computer software or hardware within few minutes. Taking care of hardware, the software networking is also equally important. Networking is the connection between two or more computer systems. This process is done to accelerate the functioning of the business.

Networking if done with more than two systems is very convenient, as all the systems can easily share the files whenever required. The career in networking is also very successful as no business can function without it and so there is always going to be a need for it. The hardware and networking is progressing at a pace as much as the technology is. Computer hardware can be defined as plain magnetic or electronic device that carries out various computing functions. Hardware is basically the physical components of a computer like the motherboard, RAM, hard disk and microprocessor. All of these play a vital role in the computer functioning, malfunctioning of any of these can lead to loss of information as well the computer cannot work at all.

It is always good to have the basic knowledge but if you want a definite career then you should go for proper training and the certification with computer hardware and software networking.

Trial that aims to address the leading cause of blindness in people with Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes being led by Johns Hopkins investigators

iCo Therapeutics (TSX-V: ICO), a Vancouver-based drug reprofiling company and JDRF, the largest charitable funder of type 1 Diabetes (T1D) research have joined forces to investigate a potential new treatment for one of the most common complications of diabetes, diabetic macular edema (DME). The iDEAL study is a Phase II clinical trial to evaluate whether the drug iCo-007 could help to treat DME in people with either T1D or type 2 diabetes. The study is being conducted at the Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

The iDEAL trial explores whether varying combinations and concentrations of iCo-007 are effective in improving visual acuity in people with DMEthe leading cause of functional visual loss among working Americans, in which leakage of fluid from blood vessels in the eye causes the retina to swell, leading to blurred vision and blindness. The Phase II clinical trial is a multi-center study chaired by Quan Dong Nguyen, MD, MSc, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and will study as many as 208 patients with DME at up to 30 clinical sites across the United States. In addition, the Retinal Imaging Research and Reading Center (RIRRC) at the Wilmer Eye Institute serves as the Reading Center for the iDEAL Study.

"The iDEAL trial for iCo-007 is one of the largest studies of its kind currently investigating DME," said Andrew Rae, President and CEO of iCo Therapeutics. "We believe iCo-007 represents an exciting new treatment paradigm for patients suffering from this disease and we look forward to announcing further updates, in collaboration with JDRF."

"Diabetic macular edema is both devastating and prevalent, and yet today's treatments are insufficient," said Aaron Kowalski, Ph.D., assistant vice president of treatment therapies for JDRF. "JDRF is committed to improving the lives of all people with type 1 diabetes, and this involves accelerating both the development and the delivery of better treatments for the disease and its complications. That is why we have placed retinopathy as a high priority research area, and why collaborations like this one are so important. Should iDEAL be successful, iCo-007 could be introduced as a potential new therapy to help preserve vision in people with diabetes."

The iDEAL study, which is in the process of recruiting participants, follows patients for a 12 month period. During the trial, patients are randomized into one of the following four groups: either one of two mono-therapy arms using repeated intravitreal dosing of two different concentrations of iCo-007; or one of two combination arms using iCo-007 with laser photocoagulation or iCo-007 and ranibizumab. To be eligible for the trial, participants must have T1D or type 2 diabetes, baseline visual acuity between 20/32 and 20/320 on the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) chart, and DME with central subfoveal thickness greater than 250 microns on optical coherence tomography (OCT).

"Using both a monotherapy as well as combination therapy approach should uncover the potential of this novel drug for treatment of a wider DME patient population," said Peter Hnik, MD, MHSc., Chief Medical Officer of iCo. The primary endpoint of the iDEAL trial is a change in visual acuity from baseline to month eight. Secondary endpoints include: visual acuity at month 12; retinal thickness as measured by OCT at month eight and 12; duration of the effect of iCo-007 at month 12; and safety."

JDRF and iCo Therapeutics expect to provide a further study update, including patient recruitment status, during the second half of 2012. To inquire about participation, please contact Quan Dong Nguyen, MD, MSc, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

About iCo-007

Designed and discovered by ISIS Pharmaceuticals Inc., (NASDAQ: ISIS), iCo-007 is a second-generation antisense drug targeting c-Raf kinase for the treatment of DME and diabetic retinopathy. iCo-007 completed an open label, dose escalating Phase I trial with safety as the primary endpoint, and visual acuity and measures of retinal thickness serving as secondary endpoints. Importantly, iCo saw no drug-related serious adverse events, no signs of ocular inflammation, no intraocular pressure issues and no systemic exposure. In August 2011, iCo announced the initiation of a US physician-sponsored Phase II clinical trial involving iCo-007, titled the iDEAL study, which is being conducted across multiple sites throughout the United States. The iDEAL Study is being led by the clinician scientists who are investigators in the trial and is being coordinated at Johns Hopkins University.

About DME (Diabetic Macular Edema)

DME is the swelling of the retina in diabetes patients due to leaking blood vessels within the macula, the central portion of the retina that is critical for daytime vision. DME is the leading cause of blindness in working age adults and affects approximately 1.6 million people in the U.S. alone, a number that is expected to grow as Diabetes is forecast to increase by almost 50% in the US by 2025.

About T1D

In T1D, a person's pancreas stops producing enough insulin to survive. People with T1D must currently monitor their blood sugar levels and administer insulin via shots or an insulin pump, multiple times every day. Even vigilant management does not ward against T1D complications such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, and amputation.
