International Deans Program Visits IESEG: 20 International Business

The International Deans Program (IDP) is aimed at recently appointed deans/ directors of business schools that are members of the Association of Business Schools (ABS) and/or EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development). This year?s IDP is with 20 international deans who will visit business schools in three different countries; France, Canada, and Norway. The deans will be participating in different strategy and educational exercises as well as share ideas and network with their peers to gain a unique overview of strategy, operations, structures and future markets in business and management education.

This year the IDP made a visit to IESEG as part of the three countries, eight university tour. The stop this year includes a tour of the campus as well as a chance to talk with and pose questions to the administration at IESEG. The event is an all-day emersion into the IESEG and French Grand Ecole approach.

Dairy cows have individual temperaments

ScienceDaily (Mar. 23, 2012) ? From a young age, dairy cows react differently from each other to stimuli from their surroundings. An animal's temperament determines how it reacts in stressful situations, but may also influence its general health. In the future, temperament could be bred as a selective trait to improve the robustness and wellbeing of dairy cows.

This is the conclusion reached by zootechnician Kees van Reenen, who will receive a PhD from the University of Groningen on 30 March 2012.

Van Reenen studied black-and-white Holstein-Friesian cows as they developed from calf to cow. He carried out behavioural tests and physiological examinations in order to determine how the animals react to external stimuli. He focused on the following, among others: fear responses, lowing (vocalization), stamping, pulse and the release of cortisol as the external characteristics of underlying traits -- including timidity, the need for social contact and movement -- that, taken together, determine the temperament.

Jerry can

In order to study the differences in the reactions, Van Reenen subjected the animals to potentially stressful situations, namely securing them with a halter for a short period, separating them from the rest of the herd, and confronting them with a person or unfamiliar object. The unfamiliar object he used was a jerry can. 'In this test, the calf or cow enters an empty room in which, after a few minutes, a coloured jerry can appears using a pulley', Van Reenen explains. The differences between the animals' responses were very clear: some of them made contact with the jerry can after just a few seconds, while others didn't dare to approach it at all during the ten-minute test.'

Anxiolytic drug

Van Reenen was also able to measure the fear response physiologically: the animals that investigated the jerry can thoroughly and for the longest time had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol in their blood than the animals that were more cautious. In order to prove that the caution was indeed a fear response, Van Reenen administered an anxiolytic drug (Brotizolam) to the animals. Van Reenen: 'The length of contact with the jerry can increased considerably in the animals that had been given an anti-anxiety drug, and the cortisol levels fell more quickly after the test.

Lowing

Although lowing could be easily interpreted as a fear response in the first instance, this was not the case. Van Reenen: 'The frequency of the lowing did not change when the Brotizolam was administered. Apart from that, calves that lowed a great deal when separated from others in the herd had a higher milk yield when they were milked for the first time later, as heifers, than the animals that were less vocal. Therefore, lowing is not a fear response, but probably a form of social behaviour: a sign that they like to be near other cows. Animals that exhibit this behaviour could benefit from social contact with other animals in stressful situations -- when they are being milked, for example.

Robustness

Notably, the differences in temperament in individual animals proved consistent throughout the research period. Van Reenen: 'This shows that temperament is a stable underlying trait in the animal. We know from research into other species, such as coal tits and rats, that temperament can influence an animal's health and wellbeing. If that also applies to dairy cows, temperament could be bred as a selective trait to produce robust animals, in the same way as traits such as good bone structure, fertility and low susceptibility to mastitis.'

Earthquakes the cause of town's annoying booms?

Clintonville City Administrator Lisa Kuss explains that recent mysterious booms that shook the small Wisconsin town may have been the result of a series of small, shallow earthquakes.

CLINTONVILLE, Wis. -- Did a minor earthquake cause the booming sounds plaguing an eastern Wisconsin city this week? Yes, the city administrator said at a news conference Thursday evening. Not so fast, a federal geophysicist said.

The U.S. Geological Survey did say that a 1.5 magnitude earthquake struck Tuesday just after midnight in Clintonville, a town of about 4,600 people about 40 miles west of Green Bay.

Geophysicist Paul Caruso told The Associated Press that loud booming noises have been known to accompany earthquakes. It's possible the mysterious sounds that town officials have been investigating are linked to the quake, he said.

Earthquakes can generate seismic energy that moves through rock at thousands of miles per hour, producing a sonic boom when the waves come to the earth's surface, Caruso said.

?

"To be honest, I'm skeptical that there'd be a sound report associated with such a small earthquake, but it's possible," he said.

Those reservations didn't stop Clintonville City Administrator Lisa Kuss from declaring "the mystery is solved" at a news conference Thursday evening.

She said USGS representatives described the event as a swarm of several small earthquakes in a very short time.

"In other places in the United States, a 1.5 earthquake would not be felt," she said. "But the type of rock Wisconsin has transmits seismic energy very well."

The U.S. Geological Survey says earthquakes with magnitude of 2.0 or less aren't commonly felt by people and are generally recorded only on local seismographs. Caruso said the Tuesday earthquake was discovered after people reported feeling something, and geologists pored through their data to determine that an earthquake did indeed strike.

Local residents have reported late-night disturbances since Sunday, including a shaking ground and loud booms that sound like thunder or fireworks. The booming continued Monday and Tuesday nights and into Wednesday morning, eventually prompting Jolene Van Beek to take her three sons to her father's home, 10 minutes away, so they could get some uninterrupted sleep.

Mysterious noises and ground vibrations are unnerving residents in Clintonville, Wis. WGBA-TV's Brian Miller reports.

"My husband thought it was cool, but I don't think so. This is not a joke," said Van Beek. "I don't know what it is, but I just want it to stop."

City officials investigated and ruled out a number of human-related explanations, such as construction, traffic, military exercises and underground work. They checked water, sewer and gas lines, contacted the military about any exercises in the area, reviewed permits for mining explosives and inspected a dam next to City Hall. They even tested methane levels at the landfill in case the gas was spontaneously exploding.

Clintonville resident Jordan Pfeiler, 21, said she doubted an earthquake caused the noises. She said the booms she experienced were in a series over the course of several hours and not continuous as she might have expected if they were caused by an earthquake.

Still, she said, "It's a little scary knowing Clintonville could even have earthquakes."

Steve Dutch, a geologist at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, said a 1.5 magnitude earthquake produces the energy equivalent of 100 pounds of explosives and could certainly produce loud sounds.

But he was reluctant to describe Tuesday's event as an earthquake, saying the term is generally used to refer to widespread stress in the earth's crust. What happened in Wisconsin could be near the surface, perhaps caused by groundwater movement or thermal expansion of underground pipes, he said.

Still, Dutch said it was possible that the event could produce a series of sounds over time.

Professor: Groundwater could be causing booms

Earlier, Kuss told The Green Bay Press Gazette that the city was spending $7,000 to hire an engineering firm in Waukesha, Wis., to install ground seismology monitors in four places around Clintonville late Thursday or early Friday.

Some residents are having fun with the mystery, which has drawn media attention from around the nation.

Jordan Pfeiler said people stayed up late on the first two nights to walk around listening for booms. They came up with outlandish theories to explain the noise - for example, that the White House was building an underground bunker in the area or that mole men had found a home there.

"And the aliens, of course, there's always the aliens," she said.
