MILAN (AP) ? The European auto industry may be showing the first signs of a slowdown in its sales free-fall, according to data from the European automaker's association.
New car registrations in April were up 1.7 percent on the same time last year, the ACEA's latest figures show. Although the April rise has more to do with the two extra work days last month due to an early Easter, sales figures for the year so far gave some cause for hope.
Last month, the ACEA showed registrations for the first three months of 2013 were down 10 percent on the year before. Latest figures show that sales for the first four months of the year were 7.1 percent less than in 2012.
"Is this the 'slowdown-in-the-collapse' that the industry is awaiting for? Let's hope so," said Carlos Da Silva of consultancy IHS Automotive.
The auto industry has been victim of the region's deepening recession and rising unemployment, and Europe's carmakers are looking to see when the bottom will hit.
Many have had to announce factory closures or put off new car launches in bids for survival.
The fortunes of the car industry have a big impact on the rest of Europe. According to the ACEA, the auto industry directly employs 2.3 million people, mainly highly skilled workers, and supports about another 10 million jobs among the carmakers' suppliers.
The declining car market in Europe has been weighing on global carmakers' bottom lines. Last year, four of the biggest automakers based in Europe ? Ford, PSA Peugeot, Fiat and General Motors ? together posted operating losses of 5 billion euros ($7 billion) for the region.
In April, 1.038 million new cars were registered in the European Union, up from the historic low for April of 1.021 million reached in 2012, the ACEA said.
Sales rebounded in Germany, posting a 3.8 percent gain in April compared with the previous year. Sales also were up in Spain, helped by new incentives, and continued strong in Britain.
France and Italy, the No. 3 and No. 4 markets, posted declines of 5.3 percent and 10.8 percent respectively.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - EU antitrust regulators have given some of Google's rivals more time to study its proposals to settle anti-competitive complaints, which could provide more leverage to pry further concessions from the Internet search giant.
The European Commission last month told interested parties they had until May 26 to say if they are satisfied with the offer by the world's most popular search engine to mark out its services from rival products in Internet search results.
The EU antitrust authority has given some rivals until June 27 to complete their technical analysis of Google's proposals, said one person familiar with the matter.
The regulator is able to grant extensions if there are strong grounds for doing so. A Commission competition spokesman, Antoine Colombani, declined to comment on the Google case.
Several Google competitors and complainants about the company's practices have been critical of the proposed settlement, which includes providing links to at least three competing search engines, and allowing rivals to stop Google from using specific information.
According to British price comparison site Foundem, Google's offer would only reinforce its dominance. Google has more than 80 percent share of the market in Europe, according to research firm comScore.
Other critics said the proposal would force rivals to compete among themselves, raising their costs and increasing merchants' dependency on Google.
If Google clinches a deal with the Commission, it would avoid a finding of infringement of competition rules and a possible fine that could be as much as $5 billion or 10 percent of its global revenue.

Initially, YouTube's live-streaming service was limited to select partners and special events, but that's about to change. Starting today, all channels in good standing with over 1,000 subscribers will be able to sign up for this broadcasting option. When using YouTube Live, account holders can insert ads, display multiple camera angles and add closed captions. Meanwhile, viewers can control a broadcast stream's playback by rewinding and skipping (previously aired content, of course) ahead à la Google Hangouts On Air. To add YouTube Live to your channel, visit your Account Features page and click the "Enable" button in the Live Events section. Google notes that eligible accounts will start gaining access in the coming weeks, which hopefully gives you enough time to save up for a teleprompter.

CLEBURNE, Texas - Living in ?Tornado Alley,? 77-year-old Bill Jones has heard the blare of civil defense warning sirens more times than he can count. But on Wednesday night it was the mighty oak trees in his yard that finally persuaded him to take cover.
?They were swirling every which way,? Jones said of the 40-year-old trees. ?We knew it was pretty serious the way the wind was blowing.?
Jones, his wife, Nadine, and their daughter and son-in-law hurried into an interior hallway, slamming a door shut in the nick of time.
?We saw the chimney come crashing down through the ceiling,? Jones said.
For a harrowing 20 minutes, they hunkered down in the 3-by-5-foot space where family photos on the wall kept watch over them.
?My wife was praying pretty loud,? Jones said. ?We were all scared.?
Outside the hallway, their home of 41 years was being butchered by what many residents and storm spotters described as a milewide twister.
?When I first saw it, my heart almost stopped,? storm chaser Mike Casey told Yahoo News.
At least 10 tornadoes touched down across North Texas on Wednesday evening. In Cleburne, where scores of homes were damaged but no lives lost, forecasters said early reports had the tornado packing winds of 136 to 165 mph.

Casey and a fellow storm chaser were behind a thunderstorm that had already spawned a deadly twister in nearby Granbury when a flash of lightning revealed the dark beast in front of them.
?We were freaking out a little bit,? he said.
So were Jones? grandsons, who live two miles away and feared the twister was headed for Jones' home.
?We tried calling him and couldn?t get him on the phone,? said Ty Jones, 19. ?We could see the actual funnel. It was huge.?
Bill Jones, a retired loan officer, didn?t need to see it to know what was happening.
?The boards were rattling,? he said. ?You could hear everything crackling and falling apart.?
He and his family emerged from the hallway unscathed, but they found the roof gone and nearly every window in the red-brick home blown away. The trees that had warned him of the tragedy to come were toppled like toothpicks.
Jones is insured, but he doubts the house in which he and Nadine raised two children can be saved.
?We?ve done a lot of living here,? he said, at times fighting back tears. ?It?s the worst thing that?s ever happened to me.?
Many of their possessions and family heirlooms now litter the house. Wading through his den, Jones picks up a soggy book cover and then puts it back down.
?I don?t even know where to start,? he said.
But his family did. With the help of friends, his grandsons spent Thursday morning hauling away the chimney bricks which came close to claiming their grandfather?s life.

The thrill of seeing live dinosaurs on screen is not as acute today as it was 20 years ago admittedly, but there is still some 3D awe left in the creations that roared 65 billion years ago...
The 3D isn't pushed on the audience, but it does reveal the amount of depth that Spielberg actually put into the film 20 years ago.
While it's not the most profound of Spielberg's works or the most entertaining from a popcorn perspective, it's one of the most technically flawless movies he's ever produced.
Jurassic Park 3D is like being reunited with an old friend; an old friend that wants to eat you and maul you to death, but still. A classic is reborn in glorious IMAX with a vibrantly stunning use of 3D.
